The Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing maintenance tasks required for the maintenance/operation of an advanced wastewater treatment plant and facilities. Treatment processes include Microfiltration, Reverse Osmosis, UV Oxidation, Lime Saturation and Chlorination and a reclaimed water filtration system.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (Illustrative Only):

  • Maintaining and repairing plant process equipment; performing construction activities and facilities maintenance.
  • Pump repair, motor alignment, equipment installation, compressor, and blower repairs. Troubleshooting of process equipment including valves, piping, Vertical turbine pumps etc.
  • Building remodeling, painting, furniture modifications, plumbing repairs, roof leaks, furniture moves, appliance repairs, landscaping, and other related activities. Perform a variety of housekeeping and cleanup activities. HVAC repairs and preventative maintenance, Landscape and concrete work.
  • Pipeline inspection and valve maintenance on various pipelines; may be required to perform welding, brazing, cutting and hard facing on plant equipment as necessary. May be asked to weld steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous metals. Depending on qualifications.
  • Maintain, fabricate, modify, and repair plant equipment; perform a variety of preventative maintenance tasks to maintain the advanced wastewater treatment facilities including campus facilities; assist in the ordering of required parts for equipment and/or vehicles; and install and remove a variety of plant equipment.
  • Maintenance, servicing, fabricating, testing, repair, welding, rebuilding and alignment of a variety of equipment including pumps, valves, compressors, and associate equipment. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as required.
  • Work in Permit Required confined spaces, wear SCBA, HAZMAT.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Training: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree; college level course work desirable in maintenance and water or wastewater.

Possession of wastewater or water certification is desirable. CWEA Grade III Maintenance Technician Certification is required, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

Must be able to obtain a Forklift Certification within three (3) months of hire. May be required to obtain a crane certification or a welding certification within six (6) months of hire.

Experience: Five years of directly related journey level skilled maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Work experience demonstrating mechanical aptitude; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Welding experience and certification is desirable. Ability to wear a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and respond to emergency situations as required.

License: A valid California Class “C” Driver’s License and proof of automobile insurance are required. In addition, employee must obtain and retain a valid California Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License with tank endorsement and without air brake restrictions within six (6) months of employment at the employee’s sole expense.

Physical: Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises and travel. Required to wear personal protective clothing/equipment appropriate for job assignments including SCBA. Must comply with District’s Respiratory Protection Program and CAL OSHA Safety Regulations. Incumbents require sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting; stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; operate office equipment including use of a computer keyboard; push, pull, lift, and/or carry light amounts of weight; verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision & Hearing: See in the normal visual range and hear in the normal audio range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment.

Schedule: 9/80 with alternating Fridays off. 6:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Grades III will be required to work on-call standby rotation with the ability to be on site within one (1) hour of being called. Depending on the needs of the District, all grades may be required to work extended shifts, weekends, and Holidays. This position reports to the Fountain Valley location.

Hourly (Non-Exempt) Range: $44.34 - $55.42 per hour
