San Jose Water is recruiting for a Senior Associate Engineer in the Capital Planning and Asset Management group. Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Engineer, Planning, the Senior Associate Engineer assists in office and field engineering and other related work as required.

Distinguishing Features
This position is distinguished by his/her level of responsibility to both support and contribute significantly to capital planning related initiatives and to lead the hydraulic modeling and smart water network applications.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create, update, and calibrate complex static and extended period water distribution system hydraulic models (InfoWater)

  • Develop the smart water network application and create data visualizations using the OSIsoft PI system

  • Perform, oversee, and/or review water system master plan evaluations

  • Lead significant aspects of the development of system and zone level population, demand, and flow projections

  • Identify, evaluate, and develop short-term and long-term capital projects based on Asset Management Plans

  • Conduct field inspections to identify infrastructure deficiencies and hazards related to pumps, tanks, wells, and other water system assets

  • Lead significant aspects of the capital planning process related to the evaluation of project alternatives and project scope, schedule, and cost

  • Collaborate with other departments to create and review capital project justifications for the California Public Utilities Commission

  • Review preliminary designs, schematics, and tactical asset management plans

  • Oversee preparation of the state mandated annual water loss audit

  • Prepare engineering documents associated with fire flow requests from customers, consultants, and the local fire department

  • Perform special projects and written reports as required

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficient hydraulic modeler for water distribution systems

  • Experience performing surge and water quality modeling

  • Experience working with GIS

  • Ability to apply critical thinking to develop options and innovative recommendations to solve problems

  • Ability to work independently and to complete challenging assignments

  • Ability to effectively work with various business functions (engineering design, O&M, SCADA, etc.)

  • Possesses understanding of Reliability Centered Design principles

  • Competent in the use of engineering and office software such as word processing, spreadsheet, database, CAD and other software employed by the utility

  • Experience and familiarity with engineering and construction drawings

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or an approved related field is required; a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering is desirable

  • Position requires California State Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer

  • For consideration as a Senior Associate Engineer – a minimum of 4 years of professional engineering work experience related to water systems is required

  • For consideration as a Senior Engineer – a minimum of 6 years of professional engineering work experience related to water systems is required

Other Requirements
Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
