The Maintenance Chief reports to the Water Treatment Plant Manager and is responsible to plan, organize and supervise activities associated with the maintenance of the Grade 5 water treatment plant in coordination with the Water Treatment Plant Chief Operator.

Duties include:

  • Recommending and assisting in the implementation of goals and objectives and establishing schedules and methods for the maintenance of the District’s treatment plant.

  • Planning, supervising, and coordinating all projects and repair work and the preventative maintenance program for the water treatment plant, Hinkle Reservoir, and associated equipment.

  • Maintaining accurate logs within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) of all mechanical and electrical maintenance work.

  • Inspecting and adjusting all water treatment plant equipment on a programmed basis.

  • Maintaining and repairing gaseous chlorine equipment.

  • Researching and ordering equipment, tools, and materials.

  • Training maintenance personnel in the use and safe handling of tools and equipment.

  • Endorsing, observing, sustaining and enforcing District safety rules and programs (PSM, PHA, ERP, IIPP, LOTO, Confined Space, RPP, HMBP, RMP, Heat Stress, ARC Flash, Hearing Protection, PPE, etc.) and all related safety requirements and planning and conducting safety meetings.

  • Assisting with capital and O&M budget recommendations, submitting justifications for various water treatment plant activities, and monitoring and controlling related expenditures.

  • Overseeing and evaluating maintenance and activities of assigned staff and responsibilities; recommending improvements and modifications; preparing various reports on maintenance and activities.

  • Participating in the selection of staff; providing or coordinating staff training; working with employees to correct deficiencies; implementing discipline procedures.

  • Responding to call back for after working hour emergencies, as needed.

The ideal Maintenance Chief candidate will possess:

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and methods of maintaining a 120 mgd water treatment plant, distribution, and storage facilities and equipment.

  • Knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, tools and materials used in the operation and maintenance of a treatment plant and associated facilities including solar field, wholesale meters and site buildings.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, training and performance evaluations, budget monitoring and safety management.

  • An ability to research and introduce procedures, materials, tools, and equipment used in the installation, modification, maintenance and operation of a water treatment plant.

  • An ability to organize, implement and direct all treatment plant maintenance activities.

  • An ability to supervise and train personnel and promote and enforce safe work practices.

  • An ability to plan and coordinate plant maintenance activities and diagnose and repair equipment.

  • An ability to read and interpret shop sketches, engineering drawings, and schematic diagrams.

  • An ability to work effectively with combined teams of maintenance and operations staff.


Equivalent to graduation from high school. Formal course work in maintenance and operation.

Experience in the supervision of maintenance staff and activities at a water treatment plant or similar facility or experience. Experience using Cityworks CMMS, Wonderware SCADA software and 5 years or more of supervisory experience is preferred.

The salary range is $45.84 - $55.01 per hour with placement dependent on qualifications.
