THE POSITION:
Under general supervision of the Collection System Manager, performs and directs the work of Collection System Workers in the operation, maintenance, repairs, and inspection of the sewer collection system.

REQUIREMENTS:
The applicant should be able to successfully perform the full duties and meet the qualifications in this position's job description. Examples of duties: inspect sewer collection lines for stoppages or damage; assist crews in the performance of sewer repair and cleaning activities; assist in training Collection System Workers; test and monitor manholes for dangerous gases and use proper safety precautions when entering underground areas; dig up and repair damaged sections of pipes; cut, install, thread and assemble new pipe; operate a variety of equipment including forklifts, vibrators, jackhammers, tampers, and cutters; repair pressure hoses; pull hoses up and down hills, over fences and through front and backyards in the process of performing repairs; maintain assigned equipment; maintain accurate records of crew's cleaning and service response activities; and perform emergency work on sewer lines and appurtenances. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Operates and is responsible for the maintenance and proper operation of specialized equipment at work sites and in transit to and from work sites.
  • Demonstrates clear communication skills for effectively conveying information about issues and solutions to team members, District managers, and the public.
  • Establishes positive working relationships with the District management, staff, other agencies, and the public.
  • Knows safe working practices, occupational hazards, and standard safety procedures.
  • Keeps the manager informed of the status of work projects, provides advice, and suggests viable solutions to problems.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: (Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and experience may be qualifying.)

Experience: Four years of experience in pipe cleaning, underground pipeline construction, and/or a combination of both.

Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Possession of a valid California Class B driver's license, and a motor vehicle record that meets the District's driving standards. Continued maintenance of the valid Class B California driver’s license, compliance with established District vehicle operation standards, and the ability to be insured for the operation of a vehicle/District vehicle under the terms and conditions of the District’s insurance program are conditions of continuing employment.

Possession of, or ability to obtain, within two years of appointment, a Grade II level certificate in Collection System Maintenance issued by the California Water Environment Association.

This position is subject to the requirements of the Department of Transportation (DOT) Regulations for random drug and alcohol testing.

BENEFITS

  • PERS (Public Employees’ Retirement System) – 2% at 60 for classic members; 2% at 62 for new members; highest three-year average final compensation.

  • Deferred Compensation – The District contributes 0.32% of base salary to a 457(b) plan; in addition, the District matches 50% of voluntary contributions to a maximum of $750/yr.

  • Vacation – Years 1-5: 11 days; Years 6-15: 15 days; Years 16-20: 20 days; Gradual increase to a maximum of 25 days after 25 years.
  • Sick leave – 12 days per year; unlimited accrual.
  • Benefits – District-paid health and dental insurance for employee and family, and vision insurance for employee; life insurance; healthcare and dependent care reimbursement per Section 125 of the IRS Code; $140.00/month cash back.
  • Employee Qualification Improvement Program – Educational assistance up to $5,250 per year.
  • Probation Period – The probationary period for Oro Loma employees is 12 months.
