The Orange County Water District has an opening for a Grounds Maintenance Technician to assist in maintaining over 500 acres of landscaping at District recharge facilities.
This is an entry-level, semi-skilled position responsible for mowing property lawns; trimming shrubs and groundcovers; applying mulch to flower beds; repairing damaged fencing caused by vandalism; establishing and maintaining irrigation systems for District properties (i.e. setting time clocks, connecting electrical wires, monitoring and repairing sprinklers and lines, ensuring proper sprinkler rotation); removing and controlling the growth of weeds and unwanted vegetation by using a line trimmer, spraying herbicides and pesticides, and/or using a light tractor; operating heavy equipment (i.e. backhoe) to dig mainlines and valves that require maintenance; using a forklift to transport equipment; netting and removing dead fish from lakes during cleanings and distributing chemicals (i.e. lime) to eliminate heavy odors caused by decaying fish; raking and cleaning debris from trash racks and gates; cleaning and maintaining drains on properties. The position may perform other duties of a similar nature or level, as assigned.
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; one year of related grounds maintenance experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A Qualified Applicators License or Certificate is highly desirable. Knowledge of grounds maintenance techniques and procedures, pesticide application, lawn care, irrigation system design and maintenance, fence repairs and safe work practices in these areas. Skill in performing landscape maintenance, troubleshooting irrigation systems, trimming trees, using lawn care machinery and equipment, and applying pesticide, herbicide, and other chemicals. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with coworkers, supervisor, and the general public.
Possession of a valid California Class “C” Driver’s License and proof of automobile insurance.
Special Working Conditions:
Incumbent is required to have sufficient physical ability to work in a field setting and stand, sit, or walk for prolonged periods of time; to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp; to frequently lift and move objects up to 50 pounds; to occasionally lift and move objects up to 100 pounds; and to utilize sight, hearing, and speaking to exchange information. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, work space restrictions and intense noises.
Temporarily 4/10 with every Friday off due to COVID-19; post-COVID will resume 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off. Must be willing to work occasional overtime, as needed.
Salary Range: $24.43 - $30.54 per hour
