Equipment Operator

Department: Field Operations/Shop Department
Reports To: Field Manager
Status: Non-Exempt

Summary: Under general supervision, the Equipment Operator is responsible to operate heavy construction equipment and participates in the work of water distribution, field and building maintenance.

Essential Functions:

• Operates rubber-tired and track-driven equipment such as trucks, tractors, dozers, etc.
• Inspects Fuel and grease equipment such as trucks, graders, tractors, skip loaders, power shovels, cranes, stationary motors, and other equipment
• Inspects, cleans, and performs minor service and repairs of equipment
• Acquiring parts and supplies, as necessary for job completion
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, suppliers, board members & public

Other Duties:

• Maintains and repairs District building, fixtures, grounds, water structures and associated equipment
• May perform welding work
• Operates a variety of hand and power tools, as necessary
• Performs related duties as assigned

Job Standards/Specifications:

Knowledge of:

• Operation, care, and servicing of heavy power-driven maintenance and construction equipment
• Operation and care of diesel and gasoline powered internal combustion engines
• Operation of auxiliary mechanical equipment commonly carried on heavy equipment
• Lubricants, and procedures in servicing equipment, vehicles, and machinery
• Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in construction and maintenance work
• Motor Vehicle laws and regulations affecting heavy equipment operation
• Use of mechanic’s tools and equipment
• Proper work safety standards

Ability to:

• Operate assigned heavy equipment with skill and safety
• Inspect heavy construction equipment, vehicles, and other power-driven equipment
• Perform a variety of minor mechanical repairs and a variety of maintenance activities
• Read and understand service manuals
• Maintain shop and repair records
• Perform heavy physical labor requiring strength, dexterity, and agility
• Skillfully use the hand and power tools involved in construction and maintenance work
• Deal tactfully and courteously with the public
• Follow oral and written directions

Typical Physical Demands:

• Operate District vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner
• Must be able to carry, push, pull, reach, and lift equipment, parts, etc. weighing up to 50 pounds
• Stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, and climbs during field maintenance and repair work
• Works in an environment with exposure to dust, dirt, lubricants, cleaning solutions, and chemicals, and significant temperature changes between cold and heat
• Communicates orally with District staff, County, and State Agencies
• Uses telephone & computers
• Sits, stands and/or walks for extended time periods
• Hearing and vision within normal ranges with or without correction

Environmental Factors:

• Exposure to extreme cold and extreme heat
• Exposure to wet and or humid conditions
• Work above floor level: some work on ladders, or other surfaces in high and/or precarious places
• Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, and slippery surfaces
• Exposure to usually loud noise levels
• Exposure to moving mechanical parts
• Irregular or extended work: Occasionally required to change working hours or work overtime

Desirable Qualifications:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or
• Five years related experience and/or training, or
• Equivalent combination of education and experience

Certificates, Licenses, Registration Requirement:

• Driver’s License: Possession of a valid California Class C License at the time of appointment.
• Possession and proof of a good driving record is evidenced by freedom from multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents.
• Also, possession of a Class A License is necessary. Failure to maintain such required license(s) may be cause for disciplinary action, up to and including termination.

Salary Range: $25.00 - $27.00 per hour.
