Performs a variety of field and office work necessary to implement and ensure compliance with the City's Industrial Pretreatment Program pursuant to federal regulations, Phase II Stormwater Program, Industrial Stormwater Program, and state and federal water quality requirements. Inspects public and private facilities, construction activities, public education and outreach, spill reporting, enforcement and or legal settlement of violations of the San Luis Obispo Municipal Code, state, and federal environmental regulations. Manages caseload, coordinates initial and follow-up investigations and monitoring of the City's wastewater and stormwater systems for inspection, compliance, and enforcement duties. Engages the public, staff and regulatory agencies in achieving the City's environmental quality goals, and provides a variety of support activities for the City's stormwater compliance program.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, environmental, sanitary, or public health engineering, natural or physical science;
One year of interpreting, enforcing, or complying with laws and regulations with a governmental agency; preferably in environmental science, stormwater program implementation, industrial inspection programs, or construction inspection,
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
POSSESSION AND MAINTENANCE OF:
- A valid California class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
- Certification of California Water Environment Association Grade I Environmental Compliance Inspector or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- Possession of a Stormwater Inspector certificate, Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Specialist Certification or equivalent is highly desirable.
- Certification of California Penal Code 832 is desirable.
