Two positions will be hired from this applicant pool, a Chemist III and Chemist IV.

Chemist III

Job duties include:

  • Performs analyses of water samples using auto analyzer, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, titrimetric, gravimetric, direct reading and spectrophotometric methods; utilizes support equipment; prepares reports and maintains records for the assigned analyses; prepares reagents and standards needed to conduct assigned analyses; performs maintenance and repairs of equipment.

  • Analyzes quality control samples; performs quality assurance tasks; documents quality assurance data and activities for assigned analyses using compliance management software; writes and edits standard operating procedures and work instructions; attests to and certifies quality assurance tasks and activities that apply to Certification of Environmental Testing Laboratories.

  • Data Management using Laboratory Information Management System, spreadsheet applications, and instrument software.

  • Provides guidance and mentoring to analysts and confronts problems that impact operational logistics of their analyses as well as other analysts’ laboratory analyses.


Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, limnology, botany, zoology, environmental science or a field directly related to analytical chemistry and three years professional experience in laboratory analysis. A chemistry degree is preferred.

A master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, limnology, botany, zoology, environmental science or a field directly related to analytical chemistry can substitute for one year of the experience described above.

A doctorate from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, limnology, botany, zoology, environmental science or a field directly related to analytical chemistry can substitute for two years of experience described above.

Comparable professional experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.


Chemist IV

Job duties include:

  • Performs routine, complex, and specialized laboratory analyses using auto analyzer, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, titrimetric, gravimetric, direct reading and spectrophotometric methods; utilizes support equipment; prepares reports and maintains records for the assigned analyses; prepares reagents and standards needed to conduct assigned analyses; performs maintenance and repairs of equipment.

  • Analyzes quality control samples; performs quality assurance tasks; documents quality assurance data and activities for assigned analyses using compliance management software; writes and edits standard operating procedures and work instructions; attests to and certifies quality assurance tasks and activities that apply to Certification of Environmental Testing Laboratories.

  • Data Management using Laboratory Information Management System, spreadsheet applications, and instrument software.

  • Provides guidance and mentoring to analysts and confronts problems that impact operational logistics of their analyses as well as other analysts’ laboratory analyses; functions as a group and team leader in addition to overseeing and coordinating the work of lower level staff.

  • Performs higher level tasks related to outsourcing analysis, supplies and services in addition to other quality assurance tasks, LIMS and management tasks as needed.

  • Assists the Laboratory Manager in the administration of the laboratory by making recommendations concerning staffing, instrumentation and equipment purchases, and contractual services; participates in the selection of vendors for lab services and supplies.

  • Functions as technical advisor for development of new methods and capabilities; functions as team lead for new instrument validations.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, limnology, botany, zoology, environmental science or a field directly related to analytical chemistry and five years professional experience in laboratory analysis. A chemistry degree is preferred.

A master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, limnology, botany, zoology, environmental science or a field directly related to analytical chemistry can substitute for one year of the experience described above.

A doctorate from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, limnology, botany, zoology, environmental science or a field directly related to analytical chemistry can substitute for two years of experience described above.

Comparable professional experience can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

SJRWMD has determined the Chemist IV to be a mandatory-testing position as described in Section 440.102, Florida Statutes. Any offer of employment for a mandatory-testing position will be contingent upon successfully passing a drug screening paid by SJRWMD. Base Salary
Chemist III: $45,219.20
Chemist IV: $49,462.40
