The Chemist I is an entry level professional laboratory analyst, responsible for performance of chemical analyses of water, wastewater, and other environmental samples under general supervision. This position provides environmental analytical chemistry expertise to East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD). This position is alternately staffed and a Chemist I normally advances to a Chemist II after gaining sufficient experience and proficiency in complex analytical procedures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing accurate and verifiable laboratory analysis of environmental samples, including raw water, drinking water, wastewater, biosolids, soil, hazardous waste, and others.
  • Setting up, calibrating, operating, and performing routine maintenance on complex laboratory equipment, such as GC/MS and ICP/MS.
  • Validating new analytical methods or target analytes.
  • Configuring and running data acquisition and processing software in order to produce technical reports and database-compatible output.
  • Maintaining a controlled inventory of reference standards, reagents, and consumables applicable to the assigned analyses.
  • Evaluating analytical performance against data quality requirements, including following up on any deficiency with root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Adhering to the Laboratory's quality assurance protocols as well as requirements from environmental, safety, and laboratory governing agencies.
  • Providing technical communications related to analytical results to peers and clients.
  • Providing guidance and training to technicians on laboratory procedures.
  • Performing manual determination steps for analyses, such as digestion, titration, spectrophotometry, and others.

The most competitive candidates will have:

  • Proficiency in complex chemical analyses performed in a regulated production setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in validation and troubleshooting of analytical procedures, equipment, and software.
  • Strong skills in complex data analysis using spreadsheets and databases.

Salary Range: $90,576 to $110,088 Annually
