General Description
IRWD is currently accepting applications for an Associate Engineer (Electrical). This position will report to the Senior Electrical Engineer and will support all projects throughout the Engineering Department with a focus on design review, construction support and inspection, SCADA and PLC program coordination, and startup and commissioning support.

This is an entry-level classification in the professional engineering series. Work is performed with direct supervision and a moderate degree of independence. Assignments are increasingly difficult and complex, requiring the application of professional knowledge and skills to problems and specialized areas.

Summary of Duties

  • Act as Project Manager/Engineer for simple to moderately complex planning, design, and construction projects.

  • Develop preliminary and final design concepts for a wide variety of engineering projects.

  • Review designs submitted by consultants, developers, and other entities for compliance with standards. Ensure that designs, equipment, and instruments comply with District requirements.

  • Review process control strategies and coordinate control strategies with process and instrumentation design drawings (P&IDs) and input/output list.

  • Review electrical coordination and arc flash studies for 480 volt and medium voltage distribution systems.

  • Provide technical support during construction including electrical and instrumentation inspection, acceptance testing of electrical and instrumentation and control system components, control system integration efforts, and startup and commissioning activities.

  • Review shop drawings and other construction submittals for compliance with the approved plans and specifications.

  • Maintain a variety of records and prepare correspondence and reports in a professional manner complying with District standards.

  • Prepare Requests for Proposals for retaining consultants.

  • Review work of and give instruction to consultants.

  • Prepare agenda items and supporting material for Committee and Board action.

  • Comply with District safety work-related practices and attend relevant safety training.

  • Responsible for all other work-related duties.


A combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, and experience as described below. For degrees obtained outside of the U.S., an official equivalency evaluation is required.

Three years of professional engineering experience, preferably with a public agency or consultant/contract provider to a public agency AND registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.)* in Electrical Engineering with the State of California.

*Four years of additional experience - for a total of seven years of experience for the Associate Engineer will be qualifying without registration as a P.E.

License / Certifications Required:
Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Class C driver's license may be required.

California Professional Engineer (P.E.) registration as noted.
