Duties: These positions will be responsible for supporting multiple projects including the Stream Maintenance Program mitigation activities. Duties will include operating support vehicles and equipment and providing labor and support of outsourced contractors for activities associated with vegetation management priorities. These positions may provide support and direction to Unit staff performing vegetation management program activities. Duties include providing direction to subordinate Unit staff and contract labor, ensuring pesticide compliance and compliance with environmental permits. These positions also may perform field investigations and surveys, make calculations of work impacts and record associated data.

Key responsibilities include, but not limited to:

• Operate vehicles and equipment associated with vegetation management activities such as water trucks, compactors, dump trucks, skip loaders, forklifts, trenchers, Bobcats, etc. • Support contract work on vegetation maintenance activities. • Calibrate spray equipment, interpret pest control recommendations, calculate herbicide tank mixes, and mix/load then apply herbicides to control undesirable plants. • Support the monitoring and assessment of success criteria on mitigation sites. • Provide input on and assist the lead and/or supervisor with tracking daily work accomplishments.

Ideal candidate's background includes:

• Class A Driver License (with air brake and tanker endorsements). • Qualified Applicator Certificate, issued by the California DPR (Categories C and F) is preferred, but must be obtained within one year of appointment. • At least 3 years of increasingly responsible field maintenance experience in vegetation management.

At least 2 years of experience:

• Weed abatement projects. • Invasive plant management projects. • Native plant re-vegetation projects. • Herbicide application, mixing, loading. • In-stream vegetation removal projects on a creek. • Applying plant identification knowledge on the job site.

• High School equivalent and some related coursework in Junior College, occupational center or trade school preferred. • Coursework in Agricultural Sciences, Botany, Agronomy is a plus.

Ability to:

• Read and interpret maps, drawings and work instructions. • Perform a variety of preventive and corrective vegetation management methods. • Perform heavy manual labor. • Identify native and non-native plants. • Operate a variety of equipment and vehicles such as water trucks, compactors, dump trucks, skip loaders, forklifts, trenchers, Bobcats, etc. Knowledge of:

• Vegetation types, plant identification, and herbicides. • Methods to manage vegetation including mowing, trimming, pruning, sweeping, raking, planting, watering, etc. • A wide variety of vegetation management activities, including, but not limited to planting native plants, control and eradication of non-native/invasive plants, applying herbicides, operation of vehicles, power tools and hand tools in the completion of these tasks. • Proper tools and equipment needed to perform tasks including hand saws, pruning shears, loppers, shovels, rakes, pole pruners, hammers, wrenches, crowbars, screwdrivers, etc. Power equipment could include weed eaters, chainsaws, power trimmers, air compressors, generators, small tractors, weed mowers, forklifts, etc. • Methods and techniques of Herbicides and methods of application mixing, application methods (backpack, hose and handgun, truck mounted boom, cut stump treatment, checking wind speed, avoiding drift and off target movement, etc.). • Forklift training is a plus.

Typical Qualifications:


Three years of increasingly responsible field maintenance/construction or equipment operation experience.


Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade License or Certificate:

Must have a satisfactory driving record and possess a valid Class B California driver's license with air brakes endorsements (Chauffer's License does not qualify). Must attain a valid Class A California Driver license within six months of appointment (District will facilitate attaining a Class A California Driver license).

Special Requirement:

Selected candidate will be required to successfully pass a medical examination and a drug and alcohol screening.
